Surefire P2x Fury Tactical

Everyone does need a flashlight, right? You can find an inexpensive model at the store next door; it will be OK to find your way at home after a power outage or to search your car trunk for keys that slipped out of your bag. But what about the good guy who needs a superior flashlight to use with his gun, pistol, or whatever weapon he carries? And the trekker who needs to illuminate the cliff he is climbing on? And the SAR crew who are going out for a rescue at night? They can do no better than check with Surefire P2x Fury Tactical lights. Among the models offered for personal, corporate or military use, they will find that SureFire P2X Fury Dual Output LED flashlight will not disappoint.

What are the desirable features for such a flashlight?

Let’s try to make a listing of the main features a flashlight should have in order to serve as indicated in the introduction and more.

What to look for in a good Surefire P2x Fury Tactical:

  • The light emitter should be durable.
  • The light emitter should be efficient as far as lighting and energy consumption is concerned.
  • Dual output (low/high beams) is desirable in order to adapt to varying conditions of use.
  • The switching OFF/ON/LOW/HIGH should be easy to operate and secure.
  • The reflector should be efficient and the window sturdy.
  • The body should be strong but at the same time small, lightweight and easy to handle.
  • The flashlight should be weatherproof to be usable in the field under adverse conditions.
  • The battery should be packed with power and have a high shelf life.
  • The manufacturer should provide a comprehensive warranty policy.

How is the light emitter like?

The light-emitting device is a CREE XLamp model XM-L LED. It is designed to be virtually failure-proof in the most demanding circumstances. This emitter is seismic resistant and impact/drop resistant. A property shared with other solid-state LEDs, there is no filament to break or burn out: it won’t let you down in the dark when you most need it and firearm recoil won’t have any effect on it. It is rugged enough so that you don’t have to bother with replacement of the unit and you save on spare parts.

You said “efficiency”?

This XM-L LED emitter is chip-regulated. This means that an electronic circuitry is watching the operation of the emitter and works permanently to maximize light output and runtime, thus saving battery energy.

Select the output level according to your ongoing task
The Surefire P2x Fury Tactical features two output levels which you can switch back and forth with a single button:

Real tactical flashlight does not need a lot of output levels.

HIGH: for maximum light and range. The output is 500 lumens and runtime is 1.5 hours. This mode is optimized for using while mounted on a weapon but is equally useful when the SureFire P2X Fury is handheld. It provides an amazing amount of light for a compact flashlight. With this huge amount of light, you can blind off the bad guy or a threatening animal for minutes, thus allowing you this extra time to get safe. This mode qualifies the SureFire Fury as a pocket searchlight.
LOW: for extended runtime. The output is 15 lumens and runtime is an incredible 46 hours. This amount of light is perfect for walking or general use. This mode is used for close to medium distance work.

Let’s check the switching capability Of Surefire P2x Fury Tactical

Now that you have got a twin-output device, you need to be able to control it. The SureFire P2X Fury features a dual-output tail cap click switch. The ON-OFF switching function is a very easy operation performed as follows: press for MOMENTARY-ON-LOW, click for CONSTANT-ON-LOW, return to OFF then press or click again within two seconds for ON-HIGH.

Low mode comes on first. Some users say that this is a drawback. I think this is done intentionally because it brings several benefits to the operator:

  • It avoids exposing the user more than needed.
  • It preserves night vision of one’s eyes which would be more quickly spoiled with high beam.
  • The low beam is the most used and the high beam is just a couple of clicks away when needed.

Anyway, if you insist that you mostly need the high output available on one click, the SureFire Fury flashlight family comprises several models offering a single 500-lumen output in the same size and similar prices.

As an additional feature, tail cap switch locks out to prevent activation during transport or storage. It works by rotating the end cap a half turn.

How reflective is the reflector?
Whether you prefer to use the high or low setting, the high-strength polymer micro-textured reflector is designed to provide an optimized beam with a bright central area (laser-like) together with a smooth wide lateral area delivering generous peripheral light.

The high density central beam is essential for acquiring target in low visibility conditions. You can accurately spot terrain details or the bad guy or your lost dog in the dark. At the same time, your peripheral vision is enhanced with the wide smooth lateral beam.

Is the glass window strong enough, you ask?
It is reassuring to know that the window is made of anti-reflective, coated, tempered glass. It is impact and thermal shock resistant and it maximizes light transmission. This is a strong device that will withstand rough handling in the field. It will not shatter upon an impact.

We need a strong and durable body

OK, you won’t be deceived: the body of the P2X Fury flashlight is very tough and durable as it is made of high-strength aerospace aluminum. The extreme durability is provided by its Mil-Spec compliant hard-anodized coating. This gives an excellent resistance to scratches, abrasion and corrosion.

You get a very rugged tool but at the same time, it is not too heavy (see details of size and weight at the end of this review). You can carry it in your pocket or in a belt holster.

Convenient body shape
The front end of the flashlight is shaped with flats all around. This pattern acts as a roll guard to prevent the tool from rolling off the table where you just left it. However, some users complain that the flats are just a bit too shallow: you must exercise care when putting the flashlight down on a flat surface otherwise it might roll off and the guards may not be able to stop it.

The rest of the body is slim and smoothly sculpted so that you can take a good grip even with gloved hands.

You want it weatherproof?
You don’t need to worry when the rain catches you on the track: the SureFire P2X Fury is assembled with O-rings and gaskets seals so that it is absolutely weatherproof. This is a must for a tactical flashlight.

Battery powered: how and how long?

However good an illumination tool may be, it’s worth nothing if it is not powered by an energy-packed and dependable battery or battery set. Your flashlight comes with two high energy 123A lithium batteries. As for any device powered with this type of battery, caution must be exercised to avoid accidents. SureFire recommend using their own brand of batteries or else a well renowned brand such as Duracell, Energizer or Panasonic for maximum safety and performance.

As an additional safeguard, it is advised to use only batteries labeled as for high-performance, high-drain devices that contain built-in fault and heat protection. Use of photographic-type batteries can constitute a safety hazard, including risk of fire or explosion, because these batteries are designed to work with a low drain device.

The SureFire battery boasts a 10-year shelf life. This means that you can purchase them in bulk packages rather than by the unit. You’ll get substantial rebates from the suppliers.

Do you get a warranty for your beautiful light?
YES! There is a limited manufacturer’s warranty against defects in materials and/or workmanship during your lifetime, excluding consumables of course and also damages resulting from misuse.

Finally, what is the size and weight of this little bright marvel?
